What is pharmacovigilance?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), pharmacovigilance is the science and activities related to the identification, assessment, understanding, and prevention of adverse events or any issues related to the use of medicines. It was established with the goal of ensuring that medications on the market are safe and effective.

The main objectives of pharmacovigilance include:

  • Identification of adverse events: Monitor and detect unexpected or undesirable reactions caused by medications.
  • Risk assessment: Evaluate the severity and frequency of adverse events to determine the risks associated with the use of certain medications.
  • Harm prevention: Implement preventive measures to minimize risks and protect patients.

What is an adverse event?

Adverse events are any unwanted medical occurrences that happen during treatment with a medication or vaccine. They can range from mild to severe and may include allergic reactions, side effects, or drug interactions.

What is an adverse reaction?

An adverse reaction is any negative or unwanted effect that occurs unexpectedly after using a medication, even when administered at common doses, used to prevent, diagnose, treat a disease, or alter physiological functions.
